Interact with coworkers during a break at a work site
When to use this goal
For transition-age students at work-based learning sites who complete tasks but have no contact with coworkers, which affects job retention. Base the choice on job coach observations. Any mode counts, including a device with workplace small-talk vocabulary.
- Baseline
- Have the job coach observe 3 breaks or shift changes and record any interaction with coworkers, who started it, and how the coworker responded. Ask the site supervisor how coworkers typically interact on breaks so the target matches the workplace culture.
- Tips
- Each break or shift change with coworkers present is an opportunity. Score correct when the student greets a coworker and makes a comment or question, or responds and adds a comment, in any mode. The job coach should stay at a distance so coworkers talk to the student. Workplace norms (short exchanges, work talk) define what counts.
- Limits
- Work sites vary widely in how social breaks are; adjust the target to the site. Job coach presence changes the dynamic. The goal measures interaction, not job performance or coworker acceptance, which depend on the workplace.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a 15-minute break at a work-based learning site with coworkers present, the student will greet a coworker and make one comment or ask one question (such as about the work, the weekend, or a shared interest) independently in at least 3 of 4 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weeks of work sessions, as measured by direct observation collected each work session, recorded by the job coach.

- Record up to 4 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
