Ask group members for their ideas during group work

When to use this goal

For students who give their own ideas but do not invite others', so groups end up following one person. Present levels in group work decide fit. The question can be spoken, written, signed, or typed.

Baseline
Tally the student's own idea statements and their questions to others during 3 group tasks of similar length. A student who shares many ideas and asks none is a good fit; a student who shares none may need a contributing goal first.
Tips
Count each question that invites a group member's idea or opinion. Repeating the same question to the same peer within a minute counts once. Pair with listening to the answer: note if the student responds to the idea.
Limits
Group size and task type affect counts; keep them steady. Frequency does not show whether the student used others' ideas; add a note or a second measure if that matters.

Criterion

Number of times a defined behavior occurs during a set observation period.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Keep every observation the same length.

Data collection

Each occurrence of a clearly defined behavior is tallied during a fixed observation period.

How often data are collected
Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a 20-minute small-group task that requires a shared plan or answer, the student will ask a group member for their idea or opinion (such as "What do you think?" or "Do you have another idea?") independently at least 3 times per 20-minute group task, across 3 consecutive observed group tasks, as measured by frequency recording collected weekly.

Baseline: 0 times per 20-minute group task.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Frequency fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Frequency (event) recording gives frequency data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Peer Interaction.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
