Contribute to peers in a virtual breakout room
When to use this goal
For students who keep the camera and microphone off and say nothing in virtual small groups, or who talk only to the teacher. Present levels in online access and peer interaction decide fit. Contributions can be spoken, typed in chat, or added to a shared document; camera use is never required.
- Baseline
- Review chat logs, shared documents, and adult notes for 3 breakout rooms and count contributions directed to peers. Check device access, headphones, and whether the student can unmute and type.
- Tips
- Count each spoken comment, chat message, or document addition aimed at the group's task. Typed and spoken count the same. Respect the student's camera choice. Assign a peer to check the chat so typed messages get answers.
- Limits
- Unless an adult is in the room, counts come from logs and miss spoken turns; record the source. Connection problems affect data; skip sessions with major tech failures.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a 10-minute virtual breakout room with 3 or 4 peers and a task, the student will contribute to peers in the breakout room by speaking, typing a chat message, or adding to the shared document independently at least 3 times per 10-minute breakout room, across 3 consecutive virtual sessions, as measured by frequency recording collected weekly.
Baseline: 0 times per 10-minute breakout room.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Frequency fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Frequency (event) recording gives frequency data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Peer Interaction.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Count each occurrence of the defined behavior per 10-minute breakout room.
- Keep the observation length the same each session. If it varies, compare rate per minute, not raw counts.
- Write the behavior definition at the top of the sheet so all data collectors count the same thing.
