Ask a classmate to be their partner

When to use this goal

For students who are left until last when partners are chosen or who wait for the teacher to assign one. Present levels decide fit. Asking can be spoken, signed, written, typed, or done from a device.

Baseline
For two weeks, note each partner-choosing time and what the student did: asked, was asked, waited, or was assigned. Ask the student who they would like to work with.
Tips
An opportunity is any time the class chooses partners. Being asked first by a peer and saying yes also counts. Teachers can reduce the sting of choosing by using random partners sometimes; this goal is for the times choice is used.
Limits
Peer acceptance is not the student's skill; score the asking. Classroom routines vary in how often partners are chosen.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, when the teacher tells the class to choose partners or groups, the student will ask a classmate to be their partner within the time the class has to choose independently in at least 3 of 4 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weeks, as measured by direct observation collected weekly.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Peer Interaction.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
