Close an online chat or video call with a peer

When to use this goal

For students who leave online chats or calls with peers abruptly, which peers may read as anger. Present levels decide fit. Closings can be typed, spoken, or an agreed emoji or sticker message.

Baseline
With the student, review the endings of 5 recent school-related chats or calls and mark whether a closing was sent. Ask whether they want help with this; some students choose to explain to peers that they leave suddenly.
Tips
An opportunity is the end of a school-related chat or call the student was part of. Use school accounts only. Explaining to friends "I sometimes just go, it's not about you" is a valid self-advocacy choice and can count if the team agrees.
Limits
Only school chats are reviewed. Group chats with many members blur when a conversation ends; count clear exits only.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, at the end of a video call or online chat with a peer for a class project, the student will send or say a closing before leaving the chat or call (such as "gotta go, talk tomorrow" or "bye, I'll send my part tonight") independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weeks, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly from school project chats and calls.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Peer Interaction.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
