Start a topic with a peer network group

9-12FrequencyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For high school students in a peer network or peer mentor program who answer when asked but never start a topic. Present levels decide fit. Topics can be spoken, typed, shown on a phone, or from an AAC device.

Baseline
Tally topic starts and responses during the first 2 or 3 meetings. Ask the student what they like to talk about and add those topics to their device or phone notes.
Tips
Count each new topic the student starts. Peer facilitators should be trained to wait and respond, not to run the meeting. Peer networks work best when peers are there as friends, not helpers.
Limits
Group size changes how many chances there are. The goal does not measure lasting friendships, which is the real point; ask the student.

How the goal refers to the student

Skill

What the student will do

Something an adult can see, count or time.

Condition

When or under what conditions

Support

Support allowed

Criterion

Number of times a defined behavior occurs during a set observation period.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Keep every observation the same length.

Criterion wording

Data collection

Each occurrence of a clearly defined behavior is tallied during a fixed observation period.

How often data are collected
Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a weekly 30-minute peer network lunch with 3 to 5 general education peers, the student will start a topic with the group by sharing news, showing a photo, or asking a question independently at least 3 times per 30-minute peer network meeting, across 4 consecutive meetings, as measured by frequency recording collected weekly.

Baseline: 0 times per 30-minute peer network meeting.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Frequency fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Frequency (event) recording gives frequency data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Peer Interaction.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
