Answer peers with their AAC device during social time

When to use this goal

For older students who use AAC and have significant support needs, and whose device is used mostly with adults for requests. Present levels in AAC use decide fit. Responses can be a single symbol, a stored phrase, a typed message, or a gesture or sign the peer understands.

Baseline
Record peer questions and comments to the student across 2 or 3 social times and how the student responded (device, gesture, no response). Check which age-respectful topics (music, sports, shows, plans) are on the device.
Tips
Each peer bid is an opportunity. Any mode the peer understands counts. Train peers to wait 10 seconds and to talk to the student, not to the adult. Add age-matched vocabulary and slang the peer group uses.
Limits
Peer bids vary in number; count them. The goal does not measure device skill alone, which belongs with SLP goals.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a peer network lunch or social time with same-age peers, the student will respond to a peer's question or comment using their AAC device, sign, or gesture independently in at least 6 of 8 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weeks, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected twice weekly.

Baseline: 2 of 8 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Peer Interaction.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
