Ask a peer to play using a word, sign, picture, or device
When to use this goal
For young students who want to play with peers (they watch, hover, or grab toys) but do not have a way to ask. Base the choice on communication mode. Precedes se-peer-003 (joining a group with a routine).
- Baseline
- Observe play for 3 sessions and record each time the student shows interest in a peer's play (watching for 10 seconds or more, approaching, reaching for the toy) and what follows: a request, grabbing, hovering, or leaving. Confirm the request form with the SLP and the family.
- Tips
- An opportunity begins when the student shows interest in a peer's play. Score correct when a recognizable request is directed to the peer within 30 seconds, before grabbing. Coach peers to say yes most of the time and to make room. A no from the peer is recorded; the student's response to it is a separate skill (se-peer-010). Adults respond to every request by helping it succeed.
- Limits
- Interest is inferred by the observer; agree on what it looks like for this student. Peer responses vary and shape whether the student keeps asking; plan peer support. Does not measure play after joining (see se-play-010).

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
