Make a new outdoor choice when an area is full or closed
When to use this goal
For students who become stuck or upset when the swings are full, the field is closed, or a game is already crowded at recess. Base the choice on recess observation and on whether the student has at least two outdoor activities they like. The goal gives a plan for the moment; it does not ask the student to give up a favorite.
- Baseline
- Log every time the first choice is unavailable over two weeks and what the student did: chose another, waited, asked for help, or stayed upset for most of recess. Make the plan card with the student, in their words or pictures.
- Tips
- Each time the first choice is not available is an opportunity. Score correct when the student starts another option or joins the line within about 2 minutes. Waiting for a turn is a fine choice. Tell the student about closures before recess when possible.
- Limits
- Opportunities depend on how often areas are full; planned closures fill gaps. Some upset is normal and is not scored against the student. Pair with a regulation goal if upset is long.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
