Keep an arm's length in lines and groups

6-8, 3-5OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who stand or sit very close to others in lines, groups, or at lockers in ways peers find uncomfortable. Present levels decide fit. Sensory needs (seeking pressure, needing to move) are met separately with the OT.

Baseline
Record 10 lines or group moments and whether the student kept about an arm's length. Note any sensory pattern (seeking pressure) to share with the OT.
Tips
Give sensory input another way (a weighted lap pad, heavy work) if the student seeks pressure. The goal is about others' comfort, not about moving less.
Limits
Crowded spaces make distance hard; note crowding. The goal does not target regulating movement.

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

An adult observes and records the defined behavior during a specified activity.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during lines, hallway transitions, lockers, and group seating, the student will keep about an arm's length from others when standing or sitting, or move back after noticing they are close independently in at least 8 of 10 opportunities, on 4 of 5 observed days, as measured by direct observation collected 3 times per week.

Baseline: 3 of 10 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Relationships, Boundaries & Personal Safety.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
