Decline to share personal information when asked by a peer or stranger

When to use this goal

For students who answer any question asked of them, including requests for passwords, home address, photos, or family details, in person or online. Base the choice on family input and any online safety concerns. A refusal can be a phrase, a card, or a device message, and may be followed by telling an adult.

Baseline
With the family, list what information is private for this student. Run 5 role-play or practice-message probes with varied requesters (peer, adult, online) and record whether the student shared, declined, or declined and told an adult. Ask the student what they think is okay to share and with whom.
Tips
An opportunity is a probe or a reported real request. Score correct when the student declines clearly and, for unfamiliar or online requesters, tells a trusted adult the same day. Keep role-plays short and matter-of-fact. The list of what is private is the student's and family's; sharing with a parent or case manager is not a failure. This is a safety and self-determination skill, not a social-rules lesson.
Limits
Real requests are rarely observed, so data come mostly from probes, which overestimate real-world use. Requests from friends are harder than from strangers; include both. Online safety also requires adult supervision and school policy, which the goal does not replace.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, when a peer, an unfamiliar person, or an online contact asks for personal information (such as password, address, phone number, photos) or asks them to keep a secret from adults, the student will decline to share the information (such as "I don't give that out") and, if the request came from an unfamiliar person or online, tell a trusted adult independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive monthly probe sets, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected monthly role-play and message probes plus any reported real events.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Self-Advocacy.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
