Graph their own goal data and state progress
When to use this goal
For students ready to track their own progress on an IEP or class goal. Present levels and comfort with simple graphs, not grade, decide fit. Use a bar graph, line graph, or color chart the student can read.
- Baseline
- At four weekly conferences, give the student their new score and the graph and ask, "How are you doing on this goal?" Mark whether they plot the point correctly, compare it with the goal line, and name a next step.
- Tips
- Score an opportunity correct only when all three parts are present: the plotted point, an accurate status, and a next step. Any reasonable next step counts (keep going, ask for help, change a strategy).
- Limits
- Self-graphing can be discouraging when progress is flat; frame flat data as information for the team, not failure. The goal measures data use, not progress on the underlying skill.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a weekly data conference with the case manager, the student will add the new score to their goal graph and state whether they are on track, ahead, or behind and what they will do next independently in at least 3 of 4 opportunities, across 2 consecutive months, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Self-Advocacy.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 4 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
