Ask for headphones, a seat cushion, or another comfort tool
When to use this goal
For young children who have comfort or sensory tools available but rely on adults to notice when they need them. Present levels and the child's communication mode, not age, decide fit. Speech, sign, a picture, or handing over a tool card all count.
- Baseline
- For a week, note when the child shows a need for a tool (covering ears, leaving the group, crying) and whether they asked, took it, or an adult offered it first. Ask the family which tools help at home and how the child asks for them.
- Tips
- Give the tool right away every time the child asks; the point is that asking works. Access to a comfort tool never depends on asking: tools stay available, and adults still offer them when the child needs one.
- Limits
- Adults judge the opportunities and may miss some; plan probes before predictable noisy times. Does not measure whether the tool helps; watch for that separately.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during group activities, meals, or noisy times when their comfort tools are kept in view but out of reach, the student will ask an adult for a comfort tool by saying, signing, pointing to its picture, or handing over its card independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive data collection days, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected daily during group and meal routines.
Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
