Request items and actions with a speech-generating device
When to use this goal
For students with a dedicated device or tablet app who are learning to use it to ask for things across the day. Base the choice on the device trial data and the SLP's AAC evaluation. The vocabulary layout is individualized.
- Baseline
- Across 10 natural opportunities (wanted item visible, activity paused, choice offered), record whether the student requests on the device, requests another way (reaching, vocalizing, pulling an adult), or does not request. The other ways count as communication and show what the device needs to replace.
- Tips
- An opportunity is any moment the student clearly wants something (reaching, looking, protesting when it is removed). Score independent when the request is made on the device without a model or physical prompt in that opportunity. Honor the request. Model device use throughout the day without requiring the student to imitate; aided language modeling is the main teaching method. For the same skill practiced across classroom routines by the classroom team, see se-com-001; write one goal for a skill, not both.
- Limits
- Requesting depends on motivation; a student who does not want anything cannot show the skill. Device access (charging, positioning) often limits data more than the student does; see sl-aac-019. The template does not choose a device.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during snack, play, or a preferred activity with the device within reach and the needed symbols available, the student will request an item, action, or more of an activity by selecting the symbol or symbols on the device independently in at least 8 of 10 opportunities, across 3 consecutive data collection days, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected three times weekly.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about AAC & Augmentative Communication.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 10 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
