Greet and respond to greetings with the device or sign
When to use this goal
For students who do not yet greet or respond to greetings with their communication system, which affects how peers and staff interact with them all day. Base the choice on observation of arrival and transitions.
- Baseline
- Record the first 10 greetings directed to the student across a day and whether the student responded on their system, responded another way (smile, vocalization, wave), or did not respond. Other responses count as communication and show whether the system adds anything the student wants.
- Tips
- Each greeting directed to the student is one opportunity, scored independent when the student responds on their system within about 5 seconds without a prompt. A wave or smile is a valid greeting too; decide with the team whether the goal is specifically system use or any greeting, and write the behavior to match. Peers need coaching to wait for the device.
- Limits
- Greetings are brief and easy to miss; staff need a simple tally. Prerecorded single-message buttons are quick but limit what the student can say; plan the path to a fuller system.

- Record up to 10 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
