Answer questions during a lesson using the device
When to use this goal
For students whose system has academic vocabulary but who are not called on or do not answer in class. The goal is participation in lessons on the device. Base the choice on the class schedule and the vocabulary programmed.
- Baseline
- Observe two lessons and count how many questions are directed to the student and how many are answered on the device. Often the first finding is that the student is rarely asked. Work with the teacher to program the lesson's key words a day ahead.
- Tips
- Each question directed to the student is one opportunity, scored independent when answered on the device within about 15 seconds. The answer's correctness is academic data recorded separately; this goal measures participation. Teachers can plan which questions to ask so the vocabulary is available. Wait time is the main teacher skill.
- Limits
- Depends on the teacher asking and waiting, and on the device having the words. Pre-programmed choices limit what the student can say and should be a stepping stone. The template does not measure content knowledge.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a lesson in which the teacher asks the student 5 or more questions with answers available on the device (such as yes/no, a choice of two, or a vocabulary word), the student will answer the teacher's question on the device within 15 seconds independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive observed lessons, as measured by direct observation collected weekly.
Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
