Tell an adult the device is broken
When to use this goal
For students who stop communicating, or wait silently, when the device is off, frozen, muted, or broken. The goal teaches the student to report the problem in any mode so the device is fixed quickly. Base the choice on device-availability logs and observation, not grade.
- Baseline
- Review how device failures were noticed in the past month: by the student, by staff, or not until later. Run two planned probes and record the time until the student signals and the mode used. Confirm the student has a backup that is always within reach.
- Tips
- Each device failure, real or planned, is one opportunity, scored independent when the student signals an adult within about a minute without being asked. Any mode counts. Keep planned probes rare and brief and fix the device right away; the point is that reporting works. Pair with sl-aac-019 for the readiness routine and sl-aac-052 for switching modes.
- Limits
- Real failures are unpredictable, so planned probes fill in the data; they are not identical to a real breakdown. The goal does not cover fixing the device, which is an adult responsibility unless the student's plan says otherwise.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, when the device freezes, runs out of charge, or loses sound during a class activity, the student will tell an adult that the device is not working using a backup board, sign, gesture, or a stored message independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 2 consecutive monthly data reviews, as measured by frequency recording collected each time a device problem occurs, plus 2 planned probes per month.
Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
