Reach stored words quickly by motor path
When to use this goal
For students who know where words are on their device but take so long to navigate that partners move on before the message is done. A consistent motor path (the same buttons in the same order every time) speeds this up. Base the choice on timed navigation probes and on whether the layout is stable.
- Baseline
- Time 10 words stored at two and three levels on two days and record the median, plus errors (wrong folder, back to home). Separate motor access time from search time by also timing a one-level word. Fatigue and positioning change speed, so note both.
- Tips
- Time each word from the end of the spoken word to the final selection. Use the median time across 10 words so one slow word does not drive the result. Do not change word locations during the goal period; moving words breaks the motor path. Speed matters because partners give up on slow messages, but partners should also be taught to wait.
- Limits
- A timed probe measures navigation, not communication. A faster student still needs patient partners. Physical access limits how fast selection can get; set the target with the OT if access is effortful.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, when the SLP names a word stored two or three levels deep on the student's device, one word at a time, 10 words per probe, the student will select the named word by completing its navigation path independently within 10 seconds, across 3 consecutive weekly probes, using the median of 10 timed words, as measured by duration recording collected weekly.

Measurability check10 of 11 met · 1 to review
Review: Unit fits the behavior. Duration measures how long something lasts. The behavior should describe an ongoing activity.
Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Duration recording gives duration data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about AAC & Augmentative Communication.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Start timing when the defined behavior begins and stop when it ends, using the definitions agreed by the team.
- The goal is reached when duration is at or below the target (10 seconds).
- Note interruptions that weren't caused by the student.
