Find buried words with device search
When to use this goal
For older students with large vocabularies on their device who give up or choose a near word when a needed word is buried in an unfamiliar folder. The search or word-finder feature lets them type part of a word and see where it lives. Base the choice on literacy level (enough to type a few letters) and observed breakdowns.
- Baseline
- Present 5 stored but unfamiliar words and record whether the student finds each, substitutes another word, spells it on the keyboard instead, or gives up. Check that the search feature is turned on and that the student's spelling of first letters is close enough for the search to work.
- Tips
- Each needed word that is stored but not visible is one opportunity, scored independent when the student finds and uses it without a prompt. Spelling the whole word on the keyboard also gets the message across; count it as a success and note the strategy. Use this to build independence with academic vocabulary programmed for each unit.
- Limits
- Requires some letter knowledge. The goal does not add new vocabulary; someone still has to program unit words ahead of time.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a class discussion or assignment when the needed word is stored but not in a folder the student uses often, the student will use the device search or word-finder feature to locate the word and add it to the message independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each therapy session and once weekly in class.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
