Tell about past events with past tense

When to use this goal

For students who share news on their device (sl-aac-021) but leave every verb in the present ("I go store"), which can confuse partners about when things happened. Base the choice on device language samples. The device's past-tense key or word forms decide how many selections each verb takes.

Baseline
Collect two news-share samples and score each verb about a past event. Note irregular verbs separately (went, ate) since the device may store them as separate words. Ask the family for photos so the student has real news.
Tips
Score each verb that refers to a past event. Count a time word plus a present verb ("yesterday I go") as a partial and track it; it shows the student is marking time. Older students' news can come from work, sports, music, and family events.
Limits
News share happens on a schedule, so samples are small. The goal measures one grammar form; it does not measure how interesting or complete the news is.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a Monday news share or end-of-day review about something that already happened, the student will select the past-tense form of the verb on the device when telling about a past event independently with at least 75% accuracy on past-tense contexts in device messages, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly samples, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly during news share.

Baseline: 15% accuracy.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about AAC & Augmentative Communication.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
