Use I, you, and they on the device
When to use this goal
For students who use names or no subject at all ("want ball", "Sam go") and are ready to use pronouns from the core page to tell who is doing something. Base the choice on device language samples.
- Baseline
- Record 10 contexts and whether the student used the right pronoun, a name, the wrong pronoun, or no subject. Note I and you reversals, which are common and expected while learning. Ask how the student and family want people in photos referred to.
- Tips
- Score each message that needs a subject. Use the pronouns people in the photos use for themselves. A name instead of a pronoun is clear communication, so score it as not the target without treating it as an error to correct in the moment.
- Limits
- Photo probes are easier than live conversation. The goal targets subject pronouns only; object and possessive pronouns need separate work.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a turn-taking game in which messages are about who does what ("my turn", "you go", "they win"), the student will select the pronoun that matches the person (such as I, you, or they) at the start of a device message independently with at least 80% accuracy on pronoun contexts in device messages, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each therapy session.
Baseline: 30% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about AAC & Augmentative Communication.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
