Add a related message to the partner's topic
When to use this goal
For students who respond on their device with messages about their own interests or an earlier activity when a partner raises a topic, so partners lose the thread. A related message can be a comment, a question, or a connected experience. Base the choice on conversation samples; a student's strong interests are welcome topics at other times.
- Baseline
- Record six partner comments and classify each response as on topic, loosely related, off topic, or no response. Check whether topic-related vocabulary was on the device; an off-topic reply can mean the needed words were missing.
- Tips
- Each partner comment is one opportunity, scored independent when the reply relates to the topic without a reminder. Program topic pages before planned conversations. The student's favorite topics are fine for conversations they start; this goal is about responding to someone else's topic.
- Limits
- Topic judgments can differ between observers; agree on what counts as related before data collection. The goal does not measure starting topics (sl-aac-046).

- Record up to 6 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
