Spell dictated CVC words on the keyboard

K-2, 3-5Percent accuracyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For beginning readers who use AAC and are learning to spell during literacy instruction. Spelling on the device keyboard gives them the same practice classmates get with pencils. Base the choice on letter-sound knowledge, not on speech or grade.

Baseline
Dictate 10 CVC words and score whole-word correct and correct sounds. Check that the keyboard layout (alphabetical or QWERTY) stays the same. Note whether the student uses speech output to check spelling.
Tips
Score whole words correct. Also count correct letters so partial progress shows. Coordinate with the classroom literacy program so spelling patterns match.
Limits
Spelling in isolation is not spelling to communicate (sl-aac-058). Access method speed affects accuracy under time pressure; give untimed probes.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 10 dictated consonant-vowel-consonant words (such as sun, map, hot) during a literacy lesson, the student will spell each word on the device keyboard independently with at least 70% accuracy on dictated CVC words spelled on the device keyboard, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected weekly.

Baseline: 20% accuracy.
