Send a text message with the AAC app

9-12OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For high school students whose AAC app or device can send texts and who rely on others to send messages to family, coworkers, or friends. Texting is a major way adults keep in touch and handle plans. Base the choice on the student's goals, family input, and phone safety rules.

Baseline
Record five situations that call for a text and whether the student sent it, asked someone to send it, or did not. Check that texting is set up and allowed, and agree on safe contacts with the family.
Tips
Each text-worthy situation is one opportunity, scored independent when the student sends a clear text to the right person without help writing it. Short texts and abbreviations are fine. Follow the family's and school's phone rules.
Limits
Opportunities vary; planned check-ins fill gaps. The goal does not cover phone safety, which needs its own plan.
