Use the target sound in family routines
When to use this goal
For young children whose target sound is accurate in therapy words and whose family would like to fold practice into a daily routine (a bedtime book, bath time, getting dressed, a car ride) rather than drill. Base the choice on word-level data and the family's routines. The family chooses the routine.
- Baseline
- Meet with the family (in person, by phone, or by video) to pick the routine and the 5 words. Have them try the routine for a few days and report what happened before setting the target.
- Tips
- Each planned word is one opportunity, scored correct when the child says it with the target sound. A simple tally card on the fridge works well. Encourage families to model and celebrate, never to correct repeatedly or withhold anything. Families may use their home language for the routine; the SLP chooses target words that fit that language when the sound is shared.
- Limits
- Family data are less controlled than school data and depend on the family's time. Use it as one source among several. Not every family wants or is able to collect data, and services must not depend on it.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a daily family routine the family chooses, with 5 target-sound words planned into the routine, the student will say each planned word with the target sound produced correctly independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, on 4 of 5 logged days in 2 consecutive weeks, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected daily by the family, reviewed weekly by the SLP.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
