Answer yes or no with any mode

When to use this goal

For young students who accept or refuse by grabbing, crying, or turning away, and are ready for a clear yes and no. Present levels decide fit. The form can be a head nod or shake, a sign, a picture or device button, a word, or a defined movement.

Baseline
Offer 10 items, about half preferred and half not, so both answers are expected. Score correct when the student's answer matches what they then accept or refuse. Record the mode used each time.
Tips
Honor every no. Mix preferred and non-preferred items so the student is not always saying yes. Score the match between the answer and what the student does next, which shows the answer was intended. Teach everyone who works with the student the same yes and no forms.
Limits
Yes and no to offers is easier than yes and no to questions about facts ("Is this a dog?"); this goal covers offers only. Results depend on the items chosen. Not a goal for complex questions.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during snack or a classroom routine, when an adult holds up an item and asks "Do you want ___?", the student will answer yes or no by nodding or shaking their head, signing, touching a yes or no symbol, or saying the word, and accept or turn down the item to match independently in at least 8 of 10 opportunities, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected twice weekly.
