Answer audience questions after a presentation

When to use this goal

For older students who can deliver a prepared talk (sl-exp-012) but freeze, answer off topic, or say "I don't know" when the audience asks questions. Thinking on the spot about one's own topic is part of every class presentation and many jobs. Base the choice on class observation.

Baseline
After a short practice talk, ask five questions of mixed difficulty and record each answer as relevant, off topic, or no answer. Ask teachers how the student handles question time in class.
Tips
Each question is one opportunity. Score correct when the answer is relevant; "I'm not sure, but I could find out by ___" counts as a strong answer. Coach peers to ask genuine questions. Students may use AAC, notes, or written answers if that is how they present.
Limits
Unpredictable questions vary in difficulty. Anxiety in front of peers affects answers; build up from small groups. The goal does not score the presentation itself.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during the question time after a class presentation, project share, or book talk, the student will answer each audience question with relevant information about their topic, or say what they would need to find out independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive monthly presentations, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected monthly and during practice sessions.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Expressive Language.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
