Try a chosen speech strategy during family talk
When to use this goal
For students who stutter who use a strategy in therapy and want to try it at home, with family members helping track it. Base the choice on in-therapy strategy data and the family's interest. Families record use of the strategy, never stuttering counts.
- Baseline
- Set up a simple home log with the family. Collect one week of logs to see how often the planned conversations happen.
- Tips
- Fill in the chosen strategy. Each planned conversation is one opportunity; score correct when the student used the strategy and logged it. Coach families to praise what the student said, not how smoothly it was said.
- Limits
- Home data depend on family routines and may be incomplete. Some families speak a language other than English at home; strategies work in any language, and the log can be kept in the home language.

By the annual IEP review date, during a family meal or car ride conversation the family and student agree to track, the student will use Blank to fill in: [their chosen strategy, e.g. an easy start or a pull-out] at least once during the planned family conversation and mark it on a home log independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weeks, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly from the home log.

Issue: Blanks filled in. 1 blank is still empty: [their chosen strategy]. Write in what this student will work on, such as the target sound or the strategy the team chose.
Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Speech Fluency (Stuttering).
Met: Level of support. Defined.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
