Ask or answer about a peer's sharing

PK, K-2OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For young students who listen to adults but tune out when classmates talk at sharing time or circle. The skill is showing they heard a peer by asking a question or answering one about what the peer said. Base the choice on classroom observation.

Baseline
Observe five peer sharing turns across two or three days and note whether the student responds to a question about what the peer said. Note how close the student sits and whether the room is noisy, since both affect listening.
Tips
Each peer turn the student hears is one opportunity. Any mode counts: words, signs, AAC, or showing with a gesture or the object. The student does not need to watch the peer; an accurate answer is the evidence of listening. Keep peer turns short at first.
Limits
Peers vary in how clearly they speak; note when a peer was hard to hear. The goal does not measure conversation skills (pragmatic goals).

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

An adult observes and records the defined behavior during a specified activity.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a sharing or show-and-tell time in which a peer talks about an object or event, the student will answer a question about what the peer said or ask the peer a question about it independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, on 4 of 5 observed days, as measured by direct observation collected twice weekly.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Listening Comprehension & Auditory Processing.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?
