Sequence sounds in three-syllable words

When to use this goal

For students who say two-syllable words but drop, swap, or add syllables in longer words (banana, dinosaur, elephant, computer). Present levels decide fit. Choose words the student uses at school and home.

Baseline
Probe 10 untrained three-syllable words and score whole-word correct. Also record syllable count correct, which often moves first and shows early progress.
Tips
Build words from the end or the start one syllable at a time, then say them whole. Random practice of a mixed set helps carryover more than repeating one word many times. A target of 60% on untrained long words is realistic for many students.
Limits
Untrained long words are hard; small gains are meaningful. The goal does not score stress, which is in sl-ms-011. Curriculum words over three syllables are in sl-ms-021.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 10 untrained three-syllable words presented in random order with pictures, the student will say all three syllables in the correct order with the correct sounds independently with at least 60% accuracy on three-syllable word productions, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.

Baseline: 20% accuracy.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Motor Speech (Apraxia & Dysarthria).

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
