Add the next event when retelling a story with an adult
When to use this goal
For preschool students who cannot yet retell on their own but can take turns in a shared retell when an adult carries the structure. Base the choice on shared reading observations. Comes before sl-nar-003.
- Baseline
- During a shared retell of a story the class knows well, create five pauses at key events and record whether the student fills each with a matching word, phrase, or action. Note which support (picture, choice) helps. Ask the family which stories the child knows from home.
- Tips
- Each planned pause is one opportunity. Score correct when the student's contribution matches what happens next, in any mode, including acting it out with a puppet. Repeated story lines ("I'll huff and I'll puff") count when they are the next event. Keep pauses at the same five points for the same story across probes, then move to a new familiar story.
- Limits
- The adult carries most of the narrative, so this goal shows participation and memory for a known story, not independent narrative skill. Scores depend on how familiar the story is.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a shared retell of a familiar story in which the adult tells a part, pauses, and asks "What happens next?", the student will say or show the next event in the story when the adult pauses independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each therapy session.
Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Narrative Language & Retelling.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
