Add vivid details to personal stories

K-2, 3-5OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students whose personal stories have the main events but read like a bare list ("I went to the park. I played. I went home."). Elaboration adds descriptions, dialogue, feelings, and specific names. Base the choice on scored personal narrative samples. For story structure, see sl-nar-005.

Baseline
Record five personal stories and count elaborating details in each. Note which kinds the student uses and which never appear. Ask families for topics so the student has real events to tell.
Tips
Each story is one opportunity, scored correct with two or more elaborating details. Let the student choose events; personal stories from home, community, and faith or cultural life are all welcome. Storytelling styles vary across families, and longer, topic-linked stories are a strength to build on. Any mode counts.
Limits
Details are hard to verify; the goal scores language, not accuracy of the memory. Some students do not want to share personal events; offer a picture-based or invented story instead.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, when telling about a recent personal event chosen by the student (such as a game, a visit, or a trip to the store), the student will tell the personal story with at least two elaborating details (such as a description, a quote of what someone said, a feeling, or a specific name or place) independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, in 3 of 4 consecutive biweekly probes, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected every two weeks.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Narrative Language & Retelling.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
