Enter a group discussion at a pause
When to use this goal
For students who either never find a way into group talk or start speaking over others mid-sentence. Base the choice on observation in groups. Raising a hand, using a talking object, typing in a shared chat, or speaking at a pause all count as entering.
- Baseline
- Observe three discussions and record each attempt to enter: at a pause, with the signal, overlapping a speaker, or no attempt. Note the group's routines; unclear rules make entry hard for anyone.
- Tips
- Score each attempt to enter. Score correct when the entry is at a pause or uses the group signal and is followed by a related turn. A brief overlap that the student repairs ("Sorry, go ahead") also counts. Work with the teacher to make turn routines explicit for everyone.
- Limits
- Overlapping talk is normal in many communities and families; set expectations to match the group's real norms. Does not measure how often the student chooses to speak.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a 10-minute small-group discussion with 3 to 5 peers and no assigned turn order, the student will enter the discussion at a pause or by using the group's turn signal, then add a related comment independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weekly observations, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.
Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
