Answer a classmate's question about the talk

When to use this goal

For upper elementary students who finish a talk and walk away, or answer questions with a shrug or an unrelated comment. Present levels and language assessment, not grade, decide fit. Students need to answer simple questions in conversation first.

Baseline
After two talks, record each question asked, the type (who, what, why, how), and whether the answer was related. Note whether the student lost track of the question; an adult repeating it may be the right first support.
Tips
Score each question as one opportunity; questions outside the topic of the talk are not counted. I do not know, I can find out counts as a related answer. Arrange for classmates to have a few question starters so enough questions are asked.
Limits
Opportunities depend on peers asking questions, so plan them. Does not measure the grammar of the answer; pair with a syntax goal if needed.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, when classmates ask questions after the student's class talk, the student will answer the question with a related fact or idea from their talk independently in at least 3 of 4 opportunities, on 3 of 4 consecutive presentation probes, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected every two weeks.

Baseline: 1 of 4 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Oral Presentation & Public Speaking.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.
