Handle an unplanned question with a bridge phrase

When to use this goal

For high school students who present well from notes but freeze, go silent, or say they do not know and stop when asked a question they did not expect. Present levels, not grade, decide fit.

Baseline
In two practice presentations, ask five unplanned questions and record what the student did: answered, bridged and answered, froze, or stopped. Ask which types of question feel hardest so practice starts there.
Tips
Each unplanned question is one opportunity. Score it when the student responds with a related answer or a plan to find out, with or without a bridge phrase. Let the student choose bridge phrases that sound like them. Never score eye contact, posture, or stillness, and never count stuttering, AAC use, an accent or dialect, or harmless movement against the student.
Limits
Does not judge whether the answer is factually correct. Strong worry about being put on the spot may need counseling support alongside this goal.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, when an audience member asks an unplanned question after a class presentation, the student will use a bridge phrase to gain a moment, such as that is a good question, and then give a related answer or say how they would find out independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, on 3 of 4 consecutive presentations, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected every two weeks.
