Pick the meaning of a word that fits the sentence
When to use this goal
For students who apply one meaning of a word everywhere and are confused when a sentence uses another ("The bank of the river"). Base the choice on classroom reading data. The expressive version is sl-sem-014.
- Baseline
- Probe 15 words in sentences with three-choice answers and record whether errors favor the more common meaning. Note which content-area words (table, cell, power) the student will meet soon and include them in the taught set.
- Tips
- Score correct when the chosen meaning fits the sentence context on the first try. Choices should include the other meaning of the word as a distractor so the student must use context. Use untrained words for probes and include some from current units.
- Limits
- Multiple-choice formats allow guessing; use at least 10 items. The goal measures recognizing meanings, not explaining or using them (sl-sem-014). Familiarity with both meanings depends on experience.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 10 sentences read aloud, each containing a multiple-meaning word, and a choice of three meanings or pictures, the student will select the meaning or picture that fits the word as used in the sentence independently with at least 85% accuracy on multiple-meaning items, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each therapy session.
Baseline: 40% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Receptive Language.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
