Explain two meanings of a multiple-meaning word
When to use this goal
For students who know one meaning of common words (bat, run, table, current) and are confused when a text or teacher uses another. Base the choice on classroom reading and the SLP's assessment; older students can use content-area words (cell, power, root).
- Baseline
- Probe 15 to 20 words, first in isolation and then in sentence pairs, and record how many meanings the student gives for each. Note whether the student can pick the right meaning from choices when given a sentence, which is the receptive version (sl-rec-020).
- Tips
- Score a word correct when both meanings are explained accurately, in the student's own words or with a clear example sentence. One meaning only is partial. Choose words that matter for class (math: table, volume, odd; science: cell, matter) with the teacher, and use untrained words for probes.
- Limits
- Some words have several meanings and the student may give two that the SLP did not plan; accept any two accurate meanings. The task depends on the student already having at least one meaning; it does not teach new words by itself.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 10 multiple-meaning words presented in two sentences, one for each meaning, the student will explain the meaning of the word in each sentence independently with at least 80% accuracy on multiple-meaning words, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each therapy session.
Baseline: 30% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Vocabulary & Semantics.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
