Check cooked meat with a food thermometer

9-12OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who cook meat, poultry, or eggs and judge doneness by color or time alone. Needs reading a number on a dial or digital thermometer and comparing it to a chart. Present levels decide fit, not grade.

Baseline
Observe at least 3 meals with meat or eggs. Score an opportunity correct only when the student checks without a reminder, reads the number right, and keeps cooking if it is too low; note any reading errors separately.
Tips
Food safety is scored on every opportunity, so the target is every meal. A thermometer with a large digital display and a beep at the set temperature helps students who find small dials hard to read.
Limits
This goal teaches a routine; it does not replace a fire, medical, or emergency plan written by the family, the nurse, or the program. Safety steps are scored as all-or-nothing, so the target is every step. Does not cover storing leftovers or cross-contamination; those have their own goals.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, each time the student cooks meat, poultry, or an egg dish in the training apartment kitchen, with a digital food thermometer and a safe-temperature chart on the fridge, the student will check the food's temperature in the thickest part and keep cooking until it reaches the temperature on the chart independently in 5 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weeks, as measured by direct observation collected at every cooking session that includes meat, poultry, or eggs.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Independent Living.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
