Ask people in own network about job openings

9-12OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students in a job search who rely only on online postings, when many first jobs come through people they know. Present levels in communication decide whether asks are made in person, by text or with a script.

Baseline
Ask the student to contact 5 people on the list over a month and record each contact in a log. Count a contact when the student said what job they want and asked about openings.
Tips
Build the list with the family. Practice the ask with staff first. Leads go into the job search log (tn-js-022).
Limits
Depends on self-report and on the size of the student's network; some students need adults to widen it. Counts asks, not leads.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during an active job search, given a list of people the student knows, such as relatives, neighbors, coaches and family friends, the student will tell a person in own network about the job search, the kind of job wanted and ask whether they know of openings independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 2 consecutive months, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly, from the networking log.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.
