Choose between two items to show a preference
When to use this goal
For students with significant support needs whose choices are usually made for them. Fits students who respond to objects, photos or symbols; present levels in communication and motor access, not grade, decide how options are shown and how a choice is made.
- Baseline
- Offer 10 choices over 2 or 3 days with options switched between left and right. A choice counts when the student selects and then takes or uses the item; reaching for the same side every time suggests a side habit, not a preference.
- Tips
- Use age-respectful options (a music playlist, a drink, a work material). Honor every choice right away. The SLP can help pick the response mode and the vocabulary to add to a device.
- Limits
- Two-option choices are a starting point, not the end goal; add options and real decisions over time. Illness, fatigue and medication can affect responses on some days.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, when offered two real options, such as two drinks, two songs or two work materials, held apart or shown on a choice board, the student will select one option by touch, reach, gesture, vocalization or device and accept the item chosen independently in at least 8 of 10 opportunities, across 3 consecutive data collection days, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected daily at planned choice points.

- Record up to 10 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
