Answer team questions during own IEP meeting

When to use this goal

For students who attend their meetings but answer every question with a shrug or I don't know. Present levels in communication and comfort with adults, not grade, decide whether answers are spoken, typed or chosen from a prepared card.

Baseline
Use a practice meeting with five planned questions. Count answers that state the student's own view; agreeing with an adult's suggestion counts only if the student adds a reason.
Tips
Ask open questions and wait. Agree with the team ahead of time to direct questions to the student, not to the parent about the student. Pair with tn-sd-035 so the student has prepared material.
Limits
Few real meetings per year. Answers in a practice meeting may be easier than with a full team present.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during own IEP or transition planning meeting, when a team member asks the student's opinion or preference, the student will answer with a preference, idea or reason, using speech, a device or a prepared card independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 2 consecutive meetings or practice meetings, as measured by direct observation collected at each practice meeting (monthly) and at each IEP meeting.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.
