Reply in complete sentences in a dialogue journal

3-5, 6-8OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who write in fragments or single words in informal writing, and who respond well to a real reader. Present levels should show the student can write complete sentences on structured tasks; the dialogue journal checks whether that carries into conversation-style writing.

Baseline
Review ten journal replies and count those with at least two complete sentences that answer and ask back. Record fragments, one-word answers, and replies with no question separately.
Tips
Do not correct grammar in the journal; model correct sentences in your own replies instead. Ask open questions about the student's interests. The journal also builds a relationship with a trusted adult.
Limits
Scores depend on the partner's questions; open questions get longer replies. Informal writing standards are looser, so set the complete-sentence expectation clearly. Exchanges can be missed in busy weeks.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, in a dialogue journal exchanged with the teacher two or three times a week, the student will write a reply of at least two complete sentences that answers the partner's question and asks a new question back independently in at least 8 of 10 opportunities, across 2 consecutive data periods, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected per exchange, summarized monthly.
