Compose AAC sentences about the school day
When to use this goal
For middle and high school students who use AAC and combine two words but have not yet built full sentences with a subject, a verb, and more. Present levels should describe current message length and the device's layout. Topics are age-respectful: classes, jobs, friends, music, sports.
- Baseline
- Over eight sessions, record each message exactly and the support level. Count a sentence when it has a subject, a verb, and at least four words related to the topic. Note common missing parts (often the subject or helping verbs).
- Tips
- Coordinate with the SLP so writing and speaking goals use the same vocabulary. Send the sentence to a real person (a family member, a teacher) as a text or email. Aided language modeling by partners matters more than prompting.
- Limits
- Device layout changes affect performance; note them. The goal measures sentence structure, not spelling. Fatigue and motor access can limit output; keep sessions short.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a daily writing routine, given the student's AAC device and a photo or schedule item from the school day, the student will compose a sentence of at least four words with a subject and a verb about the topic and send it to a text document or message independently in at least 6 of 8 opportunities, across 4 consecutive weeks of data, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected twice weekly.
Baseline: 1 of 8 opportunities.

- Record up to 8 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
