Write first name with the letters in order

PK, K-2OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

Fits preschool and kindergarten students who recognize their name but write only the first letter or a string of letters out of order. The student should be able to form or trace letters; if letter formation is the barrier, a handwriting goal comes first.

Baseline
Record five natural opportunities (sign-in, papers, art) and note which letters are present, missing, or out of order. Letter reversals do not count as spelling errors for this goal if the letter is identifiable. Note whether the student does better with a name card visible.
Tips
Sign-in routines give a daily opportunity with no extra effort. Accept uppercase if that is what the class teaches first. Letter tiles or a keyboard separate spelling from handwriting for students with motor difficulty.
Limits
Names vary in length and difficulty; a long or irregular name takes longer. This goal is about one word and says nothing about spelling in general. Reversals and formation belong to handwriting.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, when asked to write their name on a paper or project, the student will write their first name with every letter present and in order independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weeks of data, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Spelling.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.
