Write ideas on a parking-lot note

3-5, 6-8OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For upper elementary students whose off-topic or early ideas come out during instruction. Present levels decide fit. A parking-lot sticky note gives the idea a place, and the teacher reads the notes at a set time.

Baseline
Count ideas shared out of turn for a week (the opportunities). Teach the note with a few practice runs. Write an operational definition first (what counts as the impulsive response and what counts as using the strategy), and teach and practice the strategy before measuring it.
Tips
The teacher reads and answers notes at a set time every day. Score each idea as met when parked rather than said. Notes are a fair way for twice-exceptional students to keep big ideas.
Limits
Writing demands may be a barrier; sketches or a voice memo count.

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Data collection

Each occurrence of a clearly defined behavior is tallied during a fixed observation period.

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during instruction, when they have an idea or question that does not fit right now, the student will write or sketch the idea on a sticky note and put it on the parking-lot chart independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weeks, as measured by frequency recording collected daily, reviewed weekly.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Frequency (event) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Impulse Control & Inhibition.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
