Add a backup step to a plan

6-8, 9-12, 3-5OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students whose plans fall apart at the first obstacle (the library is closed, the printer is down, the partner is absent). Present levels, not grade, decide whether the student names obstacles alone or picks from a list.

Baseline
Look at five plans the student wrote: did any include a backup? Ask the student what they would do if a key step failed.
Tips
Accept realistic obstacles and doable backups. Check later whether the backup was used; that is a good discussion. Compare with ef-pl-018, which revises a plan after a problem.
Limits
Does not measure whether the backup works or gets used; check that in a later review. Some obstacles cannot be predicted, so pair with ef-pl-018 for revising a plan after the fact.

Original IEP Atlas template based on general measurement principles; not copied from any goal bank. ID ef-pl-028.

What the student will do

Something an adult can see, count or time.

When or under what conditions

Support

Support allowed

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

Each planned or naturally occurring opportunity is recorded as correct/independent, prompted, or not demonstrated.

How often data are collected
Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, when writing a plan for a project, a study session, or an event, the student will write one likely obstacle and an if-then backup step for it as part of the plan independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weeks of data, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.

Baseline: 0 of 5 opportunities.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Planning.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
