Add discussion comments while tracking each one
When to use this goal
For students who stay quiet in class discussions and later say they had ideas, and who can track their own comments. Rule out anxiety or language needs that call for a different goal. Present levels decide the target number of comments.
- Baseline
- Count on-topic contributions in three discussions before introducing the tracker. Ask the student afterward how many they think they made; a big gap between their count and yours is worth discussing.
- Tips
- Count any contribution that connects to the topic in any language or mode the student uses, including a written comment in a chat or a question. The tracker is for the student; the adult count is the data. Let the student set the target with you.
- Limits
- Discussion formats vary; keep the observed discussions similar. More comments are not the aim once the student speaks comfortably; then shift to quality.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a 20-minute small-group or whole-class discussion of a shared text, the student will add an on-topic comment, question, or response to a peer while marking each contribution on a tracker at least 3 times per 20-minute discussion, in 4 of 5 consecutive observed discussions, as measured by frequency recording collected weekly.
Baseline: 0 times per 20-minute discussion.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Frequency fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Frequency (event) recording gives frequency data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Self-Monitoring.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Count each occurrence of the defined behavior per 20-minute discussion.
- Keep the observation length the same each session. If it varies, compare rate per minute, not raw counts.
- Write the behavior definition at the top of the sheet so all data collectors count the same thing.
