Set a timer for the time shown in the directions

When to use this goal

For students who cook with picture recipes but need an adult to set the microwave or timer. Base the choice on present levels in reading two-digit numbers and the minutes-seconds format.

Baseline
Present 5 directions with different times and record whether the student entered the right time and started the device. Note the error type: wrong number, minutes entered as seconds, or forgetting to press start.
Tips
Microwave keypads enter 1:30 as 1-3-0; teach the device the student will use. A kitchen timer with large buttons is an easier first device. Pair with fn-dl-011 for the full microwave routine.
Limits
Devices differ; practice on the one at home if the skill is for home. Waiting for the timer and responding to it is a separate step in the cooking routine.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a package or recipe direction with a cooking time and a kitchen timer or microwave, the student will set the timer or microwave for the time in the directions and start it independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly during cooking lessons.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Functional Academics.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
