Exercise for fun several times a week

When to use this goal

For middle and high school students who are rarely active outside PE and who have named an activity they like (walking, biking, dancing, shooting hoops, a workout video). Present levels and the student's interests decide fit. Activity limits come from the health provider.

Baseline
Ask the student and family to log activity for two weeks. Agree on what counts (a minimum number of minutes of the chosen activity). Start from an interest inventory with the student and family, and offer age-matched choices; a preferred repetitive activity is a valid way to relax, not a problem to fix.
Tips
Count each logged session that meets the agreed minutes. The activity is the student's choice. Adapted PE staff can suggest community options.
Limits
Self-report and family logs can be rough. Does not measure fitness; see physical fitness goals.

Something an adult can see, count or time.

Criterion

Number of times a defined behavior occurs during a set observation period.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Keep every observation the same length.

Criterion wording

Data collection

Each occurrence of a clearly defined behavior is tallied during a fixed observation period.

How often data are collected
Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during the week, outside of PE, at home or in the community, the student will complete a self-chosen physical activity for at least the agreed minutes and log it independently at least 3 times per week, across 4 consecutive weeks, as measured by frequency recording collected weekly, from the log.

Baseline: 0 times per week.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Frequency fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Frequency (event) recording gives frequency data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Leisure & Recreation.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
