Make a choice between two items

When to use this goal

For preschoolers who do not yet show a choice when offered two items, so adults guess what they want. Present levels in communication from the SLP and the student's AAC system decide fit. Any clear mode counts: reaching, pointing, eye pointing to an object, signing, or a device.

Baseline
Offer 10 choices across routines over 3 days. Count a clear choice when the student showed a preference within about five seconds and accepted the item. Switch item sides to rule out side bias.
Tips
Always give the chosen item; that is what makes choosing worth it. Offer one preferred and one less preferred item at first. Choices across the day give students control and reduce frustration.
Limits
Choosing an item does not mean the student understands the symbol; teach symbol use separately with the SLP. Students with motor needs may need positioning help to reach.
